The Specialist Behavioural Support is described by NDIS as highly specialised intensive support interventions to address significantly harmful or persistent behaviours of concern. Development of behaviour support plans that temporarily use restrictive practices, with the intention to minimise the use of these practices.

AussieCare Behaviour support specialists understand that Behaviour support is about creating individualised strategies for people with a disability that are responsive to the person’s needs, in a way that reduces the occurrence and impact of behaviours of concern and minimises the use of restrictive practices. Under the NDIS Commission, behaviour support focuses on person-centred interventions to address the underlying causes of behaviours of concern or challenging behaviours, while safeguarding the dignity and quality of life of people with disability who require specialist behaviour support. Our Specialist Behavioural Engagement assists our clients to reduce the risk of harmful behaviours and supports positive outcomes.

We adhere to using regulated restrictive practices that meet the requirements outlined in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (Restrictive Practices and Behaviour Support) Rules 2018.

BEHAVIOURAL APPROACH TO SPECIALIST BEHAVIOURAL SUPPORT

The behavioural approach to Specialist Behavioural Support focuses on the assumption that the environment determines an individual’s behaviour. How an individual responds to a given situation is the result of prior learning, and usually, behaviour that has been reinforced in the past. Behaviourists believe that that behaviour is ‘learned’ and can, therefore, be unlearned. Behaviour therapy focuses on individual behaviour and aims to help people to modify unwanted behaviours. Unwanted behaviour is defined as an undesired response to something or someone in the environment. Using this approach, a counsellor would identify the unwanted behaviour with a client and together they would work to change or adapt the behaviour.

At AussieCare, we identified this type of therapy to respond well to phobias, anxiety attacks and eating disorders. Clients might be taught skills to help them manage their lives more effectively.
